| Last month we left you with a few
ideas on what not to do for that cold you might have picked up this
time of year. This month, we give a few tips for things you can
do to help...
|
 |
- Stay warm - Bodily heat really does play an important role in
determining how long a virus can stick around. Your grandmother
was right in advising you to bundle up, keep your feet warm, and
not expose yourself to cold winds.
- Rest - Why not? If you’re like most of us, you could probably
use one, and a cold is a genuine excuse! The immune system is
adversely affected by lack of sleep, and helped by resting when
it’s under stress.
- Exercise - Gentle exercise supports immune function, but it’s
not a good time for marathons or triathalon training! During a
cold, just keep the body moving, muscles stretched, and circulation
flowing. If it’s calm and sunny outside, a walk is great.
Don’t get cold though!
|
|
- Stay away from others - We all love to soldier on and keep active,
and to show how committed we are by showing up at work despite
our physical misery. However, it’s good to keep in mind
the harm we do if we make others sick. If you must be around others,
be well aware of how much you touch your face and rub your eyes,
and tighten up on your nose-blowing hygiene.
- Warm soups - Again, grandma was right. Vegetable broth and pumpkin
soups are especially healing, offering lots of good nutrients
without taxing your digestion.
- Ginger - ginger root tea with honey can be soothing for an inflamed
throat and help to keep the digestive fire strong.
