If you think you’re stressed out this holiday season, just consider poor Santa Claus.

Working through the time zones and considering the rotation of the earth, we estimate that this pitiable bloke has about 31 hours to shimmy down the chimneys of 378 million Christmas-celebrating children in the world.

This works out at about 967.7 visits per second, giving Santa about 1/1000th of a second each household to make his landing, shimmy down the chimney, distribute the goods, fill the stockings, and have a bikkie before climbing back up the chimney, buckling himself back into his sled, and flying to the next house.

Like Santa, you may find that Christmas is a time where it’s easy to be overwhelmed by social and family responsibilities. What Santa and the rest of us need is to learn how to stay in the eye of the storm. We can’t avoid stress, but we can stay centered in the midst of it. Staying calm and cool is easier when our bodies are balanced, so follow these seasonal tips to give yourself an advantage and enjoy the season instead of getting exhausted by it:
  • Stay cool! Remember that the midday sun is for mad dogs and Englishmen. Keep to a good exercise routine, but make sure it doesn’t overheat you. Going for a lunchtime run in this weather can see you blowing a bit of steam later in the afternoon and evening.
  • do your most vigorous exercise in the early morning or evening
  • eat lots of cucumber, sprouts and other green salads
  • hold off the chili and other hot, spicy food. Too much coffee, chocolate and alcohol will also overheat the body.
