Looking for ideas on how to make
the most of the change of seasons? Nowhere is spring celebrated
with more festivity and joy than in India.
There, a spring festival called Holi sees people from all walks
of life engaging in a massive, messy, happy battle of colour. During
the days of Holi, even distinguished, serious adults greet their
friends and family with a hug and then a friendly smearing of coloured
powder on their face. The kids squirt liquid colour from special
water pistols, and usually end up in mass neighbourhood mud fights
in the spring puddles. It’s a time of happy chaos, breaking
up the usual humdrum routine.

As with most holidays, this festivity is based on
a bit of ancient wisdom. First, Holi’s dancing and exuberant
greetings remind us that spring is a time to get moving and throw
off the introversion of winter. Get your creativity and imagination
flowing by sharing ideas and time with people who inspire you. Don’t
just sit around in cafes or bars, though. Exercise you mind and
body by trying something you’ve never done before—push
your limits a little.
Here in New Zealand, instead of smearing each other with gaudy-coloured
dyes, we can simply remember that Spring is a good time to eat bright
coloured vegetables with lots of fresh flavour. Choose salads and
use brightly coloured relishes and chutneys to add flavour and some
extra nutrition. For recipe ideas, click here: http://ayurlab.ayurlab.com/food
Also, use the longer evenings and extra energy your body has stored
during winter to get out in the garden planting colourful flowers
and vegetables. You’ll work off some of your winter stagnation
and invest in future home-grown autumn feasts. |
