If you haven’t already succumbed
to the Christmas frenzy, congratulations! If you have, there’s
still time to take a breath and look at how to make your Christmas
about what really matters. We’re here to make sure it happens!
|
 |
Still have a few things to buy for friends and
family? Everyone will feel better about a gift that doesn’t
literally cost the earth. Consider these 3 tips:
1. Buy service gifts, such as massage vouchers (if in Auckland,
try these
guys). Or give an experience, like tickets to a good play or
concert.
2. Think about what you can offer. Do you know anyone who’d
appreciate babysitting vouchers, a coupon for weeding a garden,
or a complimentary sample of your professional skills?
|
| 3. If you want to buy
products, stay out of the shops. In the time it takes to drive to
and find a park at the local mall, you can tick off half your Christmas
list online. You’ll also keep your car from mucking up the
atmosphere.
Tips for Gatherings & Parties
Just because you want to be the host with the most, doesn’t
mean your party has to be all about consumption. Make your focus
the people you love (and like).
1. Choose energy-efficient LED lights for your Christmas tree and
party décor.
2. Buy local and organic food and drinks as much as possible. Farmers’
Markets are full of yummy treats at this time of the year.
3. Plastic or paper dishes and cups are an ecological nightmare,
and leach harmful chemicals when they come into contact with hot
food or drinks. Real dishware looks and feels so much better, and
if you don’t have enough to go around, you’ll find some
good second-hand stuff at the op shop for about the same price as
disposables. “But what about all those dishes?” Well…
We know a now-happily-married couple who, too shy to make small
talk at the soiree where they met, found laughter and love blossoming
in the suds when they volunteered for dishwashing duty! So re-think
the idea that guests won’t enjoy helping with dishwashing.
Fill your heart with Christmas spirit, put on some good music, and
leave it to others! Before you know it the dishes will all be washed
or stacked in the dishwasher, while you tend to other’s needs.
If you simply can’t use dishware, try compostable plates,
cups, and cutlery. Potato (starch) plates and corn (starch) cutlery
can now be found in most supermarkets or online. |
